6 Bronze Casts, set into granite sundial
Commissioned as part of re-landscaping works, Grand Union Canal, Westbourne Green, Paddington
This project began with an exploration along the Grand Union Canal with Mary Magdalene & St. Stephen’s Primary School, Westbourne Green. We set out looking for plants that were flourishing in the sunlight.
We stopped to notice, name and take samples of plant life, from algae to London Plane trees. Bringing samples back to the classroom, we pressed them into circles of earthenware clay and the students took these pressings home.
I returned to the canal to re-source the samples that had made the strongest impressions and from these made patterns for sand-casting. The resulting bronze pieces were set into granite as part of a ground level sundial at Westbourne Green.
The plants featured are: Dog Rose (Rose Hip), Fig (Common), Grasses, Clematis (Vitalba), Buddleia and the evergreen plants Holly & Ivy.
