My Friend 2017

Audio Visual Time-Based Work (20 Minutes)

Commissioned by Stories of Change, funded by AHRC

Stories of Change, Exploring the past, present and future of energy, invited the public to submit writing which imagined fossil fuel energy as a friend named Jules – what would that relationship be like, what conversations might be had?

I was handed a large pack of diverse and thoughtful writing. To process this, I gathered actors - Anyebe Godwin, Joyce Henderson and Philip Bosworth - at the National Theatre Studio for a week’s workshop. We started by focussing on breath, body and sounding words. Gradually we moved to longer passages and through improvisation arrived at a final script. We recorded the script and I then edited the sound and set it to visuals with animator Levan Tozashvili.

My Friend has been exhibited as part of a group exhibition, Energetic – Exploring the Past, Present & Future of Energy, at Museum of Making, Derby Museums & Art Gallery (2017) and Royal Geographical Society (2018). It features in a book by the same title, published 2018.
